BETEL LEAF Part one

BOTANICAL NAME:      PIPER BETEL







The leaf is very aromatic, carminative, stimulant, expectorant, styptic and has antiseptic properties. 

In every Indian function where feast is served you are sure to find a platter (Thamboolam) with Betel leaves, Betel nut and lime paste.  The less spicy, light green leaf is categorised as female is preferred over the dark green, spicy male betel leaves. It is an accepted custom that having thamboolam aids digestion.

Ancient books described the importance of Betel Leaf as a great Ayurvedic medicine. Betel leaf is traditionally used in the treatment of various diseases as home remedy, for many respiratory tract disorders, bad breath, boils and abscesses, conjunctivitis, constipation, headache, itches, mastitis, leucorrhoea, otorrhoea, ringworm, swelling of gum, rheumatism, abrasion, cuts and injuries etc.
There are number of research experiments on Betel Leaf, where the leaf extract, fractions, and purified compounds are found to play a role in oral hygiene, and to have various properties including anti-diabetic, cardiovascular, anti-inflammatory/immunomodulatory, anti-ulcer, hepato-protective, anti-infective, etc., Patents were also awarded for some of the biological activities like anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and immunomodulatory associated with the leaf extracts and purified compounds. Tip 1

Relief from Stomach Bloated




For Stomach Bloated due to excess wind in stomach Chewing and swallow 1 betel leaf with 2 pcs black pepper. Later sip a glass of hot water. Just in a few minutes you will pass out gas and feel much relieved. 

Tip 2
Feeling discomfort after a heavy meal ? 









Chew slowly and eat 2 betel leaves with 1 small piece of betel nut and 1/2 teaspoon of funnel seed. You will be relieved of discomfort within a few minutes. Also, remember to drink lots of warm water.

Is your child having no appetite or throwing up milk after feed?
Try this..




Crush and extract 1 - 2 drops of betel leaf juice and mix with 1 teaspoon of warm water. This can be given to very small children who has no appetite and throws up milk after feed. Best given 1st thing in the morning.

1)    Want relieve from itch due to insect bites?
-          Crush a shallot, and apply it over the area of the insect bite.

2)    Want younger looking skin?
-          Shallots contain sulphur, Consume shallot regularly for younger looking skin

3)    Having painful joints or inflammatory swelling?
-          Crush 2 – 3, shallot’s juice and mix with mustard oil. Warm it over low flame and apply over the painful joints for immediate relief.

4)    Want relieve from itchy or inflamed piles?
-          Fry 6 pcs of shallots in sesame oil and apply it warm, on the protruding piles. Should be left overnight for better results.

5)    Sneezing every morning, having itchy throat, block nose?
-          Try chewing shallot raw before breakfast and before bedtime.

6)    Want to Detoxify blood system?
-          Take 3 – 5 raw shallots daily, it helps the liver to remove toxins from the body, as it has glycosides to inhibit and kill cancer cell. (1)

Pati Vaithiyam - Tumeric

Botanical name: Curcuma longa

Nature: Carminative, Stimulant, Hepatic Tonic

Parts used: Roots or Rhizomes and bulbs are used.

Turmeric, has been used for more than 4,000 years as spice, colouring agent and as medicine to treat a variety of health conditions. From ancient times of Siddhars till to date, medical practitioners both from East and West have used turmeric for its effective healing properties. In our Indian homes, remedies which have been passed down from our grand grannies, have proven to be very effective in treating many common ailments.

Scientists have realized the importance of curcumin/turmeric and are doing research extensively. *Studies show that curcumin is a very powerful antioxidant that helps to fight infections, reduce inflammation, treat digestive problems, Ulcerative colitis, Stomach Ulcers, Osteoarthritis, Heart Disease, liver problems, and skin diseases and some cancers.

Try this:       
Soak a few pieces of clean cotton cloth in a glass of water with turmeric powder and dry it under the sun and wipe eyes regularly with this. You can also place the damp cotton cloth soaked in Turmeric on your eyelids before bed time.

TIP 3

Want relief from Sore throat and Cough :







Try this:
Take a quarter teaspoon of turmeric powder and a pinch of black pepper and mix it well in a glass of milk. Taken before bedtime, soothes throat and give relief from cough.


TIP 4

Having gum problems, Try this:








Add a pinch of Turmeric to a quarter teaspoon of coconut oil. Dab the mixed paste with a clean cotton cloth or with tip of finger and massage gums. Use this twice a day after brushing your teeth.

Paal Thailam

Paal Thailam

A formula used by Siddha Physician for ages. (Siddha Maruthuva Anubava Murai).  Excellent and effective oil for all types of skin disorders, itch, fungal, weeping eczema.
Vilva Elai– Wrightia-tinctoria leaves

Vetpalai Elai – Aegle marmelos leaves

Thegaai Ennai – Coconut oil 

Ingredients:

Vetpalai Elai – (Wrightia-tinctoria leaves) – 200 grams

Vilva Elai – (Aegle marmelos leaves) – 200 grams

Thegaai Ennai – (Coconut oil) – 1 litre



Preparation:
Place the three ingredients in a Copper pot and leave it in the sun for 12 days till essence from leaves mixes with oil. Filter and use externally.
