ALL ABOUT PULSE READING

PULSE READING

Art of Pulse reading is a boon for the physician in finding out the exact nature of disease without the aid of appliances and they found it successful. The “Pulse Diagnosis” is very unique in Siddha System of Medicine, which was introduced to other Indian Systems of Medicine at a later period.

Passed on from Guru to student
Pulse reading can be achieved only by the guidance of an able Guru, concentration of Mind and control over the sense organs.  It cannot be scientifically taught, but is to be understood by developing the mental faculty and meditation of mind and a clear understanding of the relationship between the human organism and the surrounding nature. Prolonged experience is an added advantage. It has been said that an experience Physician just by feeling the pulse could ascertain the accurate time to death of a patient.

Imbalance of Tri-dosa
Great Siddhars like Tirumoolar and Agastyar have upheld the importance of Nadi diagonosis. A disease state is caused by nothing else but the imbalance of these Doshas. Diagnosis of diseases is an important factor in any system of medicine. Unless the diagnosis is correct, however very good medicines are administered to the patient there will be no radical cure unless the root cause of it is rectified.

Position of Pulse
The pulsations felt on  the index finger, middle finger and ring finger correspond respectively with vatha, pitha and kapha factors. The three fingers should be placed in such a manner that there is an inter space of half a centimetre between each finger, the index finger being at the top near the wrist joint, followed by the middle and the ring finger.  It helps to find out the imbalance or predominating kuttram (humor).

How is it done?
Examine the pulse by the index finger by slightly pressing it, but at the same time not pressing the other two fingers, but they may be on the course of the radial artery. Then apply little pressure sufficiently enough to feel the pulse wave clearly, but it should not be compressed well to obliterate it. The sense of feeling by the index finger, the status of vatha dosha is confirmed.
